Microwave Technologies

Main ideas:

Radiation with frequency between 300 MHz and 300 GHz in electromagnetic spectrum, which located between infra-red and radio frequency, named microwave radiation. In most heating microwave appliances frequency 2450 MHz is used. Domestic microwave oven also uses this frequency.

History:

In 1921 American physicist A. Hall introduced term "magnetron".

At the end of 1930 Leningrad physicists headed by Roganskiy D.A. and Kobzarev U.B. developed impulse radio-location principles, and build first radio-location station for enemy aviation disclosure.

Second World War - scientists from Birmingham University created singly resonant microwave generator.

In 1945 American engineer P.Spenser found out the thermal action of microwaves.
Patent for microwave oven creation belongs to him.

In 1949 production of large dimension microwave oven begins.

In 1962 Japanese company "Sharp" started mass production of common microwave ovens.

Advantages:

For traditional thermal heating methods it is typical heat transfer in volume of substance from its surface to bulk using thermal conductivity and convection mechanisms. If thermal conductivity of object is low (conmon situation among dielectrics) then heating occur very slowly with local surface overheating. In the case of microwave heating, heat occurs "inside" sample at one time in all volume of sample. It happens due to dielectric loss effect.
